Mildred T. Rhodebeck Garden (Garden of Eden)
The Bronx
Hunts Point
Sponsored by Joel Rosenthal
This garden was founded in 1981 as part of the Police Athletic League program. It was renovated by NYRP in 2018 thanks to the generous sponsorship of Joel Rosenthal and additional support from The Ronald and Jo Carole Lauder Foundation. With the expert assistance of architecture and design firm Sawyer | Berson, NYRP worked closely with the Bronx Elementary School P.S 150 to develop the design of the garden to best serve the Morrisania neighborhood.
The garden is cared for by dedicated community residents who grow fruits, vegetables and herbs including cucumber, beans, spinach, thyme, and rosemary in the 12 garden beds and heavily utilize the space’s composting center. P.S. 150 is directly across the street from the garden and teachers and students frequently visit throughout the week to seek a respite from their entirely concrete school yard.
Special events and performances are organized at the garden throughout the season, such as a summer yoga series and outdoor film screenings, and neighborhood residents make use of the barbeque grill and picnic tables while hosting family gatherings.
