• Bette's Rose Garden

As a special 60th birthday present, and to celebrate NYRP’s 10th anniversary, the Trustees of NYRP transformed this once-empty space in the Melrose section of the South Bronx into a rose garden. Acclaimed landscape architect Brian Sawyer generously provided the design for this beautifully manicured, 1,500-square-foot garden. Situated directly across from JHS 145 and other schools of the Arturo Toscanini campus, the garden’s triangular shape features roses, planting beds, and an outdoor classroom where students study the environment and cultivate vegetables, including tomatoes, basil, peppers, eggplant, and oregano.

In 2007, MillionTreesNYC launched just down the block where “Tree One” was planted on the northeast corner of 165th Street and Teller Avenue. Commemorative trees were planted both in Bette’s Rose Garden and in front of JHS 145 to celebrate the occasion.
