Established in 1994 by the primarily Hispanic residents of this bustling neighborhood in the South Bronx, Members Garden/Dalia Group Community Garden was rescued from development by NYRP in the late ’90s and renovated in 2024 partnership with The Ashner Family Evergreen Foundation, the New York State Parks Environmental Protection Fund, and the USDA-NRCS.
Working in close collaboration with gardeners and community members, NYRP helped develop a new vision for the small but active space to prepare it for another three decades of community use. Improvements included regrading the garden to ensure ADA accessibility; installing an in-ground water and irrigation system; constructing a central patio with a shade structure; building a new storage shed; installing new raised gardening beds with clean soil; and preserving existing fig, persimmon, and magnolia trees. These upgrades will support the garden’s dedicated growers, who distribute much of their annual harvest to local community members.
