MillionTreesNYC was an innovative, public-private initiative with an important and ambitious goal – to plant and care for one million new trees across the city’s five boroughs. Led by New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks), the initiative not only maintained momentum, it sped up and was completed two years ahead of schedule! More than one million trees have been planted throughout the five boroughs!

New York City has always been a place where even the biggest ideas can become reality, and there's no better example of this than MillionTreesNYC. In partnership with NYRP and with the volunteer participation of thousands of New Yorkers, we will plant one million new trees throughout the five boroughs in just ten years - proof that no dream is too big in the Big Apple! Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg

MillionTreesNYC gave New Yorkers everywhere access to the many environmental, social and economic benefits that trees provide-- which are especially important for a healthy city. It has become a citywide movement that has engaged individuals, and energized communities, to plant trees and foster greater respect for the city’s urban forest. The intiative has also boosted interest in volunteerism, environmental education and public policies that are leading to a more beautiful, more sustainable and healthier New York City.

We fulfill our commitment primarily through two ways during the spring and fall seasons:

  • Directly planting the trees alongside community and corporate volunteers.
  • Providing free trees to New Yorkers to plant in their backyards, front yards, courtyards or community gardens.

MillionTreesNYC was generously supported by lead sponsors TD Bank and Toyota. Supporting sponsors included Con Edison, and JetBlue Airways.
