The Herb Garden – nestled between two apartment buildings – provides an oasis of natural green beauty and a community gathering spot for the neighborhood. New York Restoration Project (NYRP) restored the garden in 2006 with help from acclaimed fashion designer Linda Allard and her husband, Herbert Gallen. Long-time NYRP supporters, Allard and Gallen generously funded the garden’s renovation and endowment, and Ms. Allard provided an original design for the site.

The front of the garden features vegetable and flower planting beds, where community members grow peppers, tomatoes, basil, lavender and parsley. In the back, a sunken, circular gathering area paved with garden stones is an ideal spot for community events and barbecues. A pergola is designed to bridge the transition between these two distinctive garden zones – each flourishing with Allard's abundant and colorful planting scheme.

NYRP officially reopened the Herb Garden to the public in May 2006. The garden is located in East Harlem, within blocks of 10 schools and in close proximity to five New York City Housing Authority properties. The Herb Garden – as well as NYRP’s nearby El Cataño Community Garden – serves residents in an area of New York City particularly starved for green, open space.
