Garden of Hope
Brooklyn
Bedford-Stuyvesant
The history of the Imani Community Garden is rooted in the adjacent Our Lady of Charity Church, whose committee of devoted environmental stewards began tending the site in 1982. Although the garden had experienced insufficient use in former years, there is now a renewed interest in activating the site, where community members hold neighborhood gatherings, grow vegetables and even raise animals, such as chickens and rabbits.
“Imani Garden really offers something for everyone, which helps bring all types of people to the garden,” says garden coordinator Becca Mason. “Between our industrious composting operation, cutest chickens (no bias here), communal vegetable garden, enthusiastic community partners and newly reopened event space, our members have done so much in service of their fellow gardeners and the larger Weeksville Community. Imani will continue to make community events and produce giveaways cornerstones of our beautiful Weeksville location.”
