City of Forest Day 2024: Tour a Native Forest in Manhattan

Celebrate City of Forest Day 2024 with a hike in Manhattan.

Come tour native forest restorations in Highbridge Park with the Forest Restoration Specialist, Ryan Lawrence. The walk will showcase a variety of NYRP’s native forest plantings from <1 to 7 years old. We will show various stages in the process of forest restoration, including plantings of both canopy trees and understory plants such as grasses, ferns, and wildflowers.

We will walk back to the starting point after the tour is over.

Duration – one-hour walking tour with 4 stops:

1. Salamander site – planted Fall 2022-Fall 2023 with trees and understory
2. Overlook rock – good view of Harlem River and tree planting from Fall 2023
3. Flores steps – understory planting from Spring 2024
4. Chestnut grove – planted 2017 (7 years old).
