Green Spaces

image description
Sherman Creek Park's Cherry Tree Esplanade

Working hand-in-hand with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (NYC Parks), New York Restoration Project (NYRP) has played a major role in completely reshaping the city’s landscape by restoring the four major parks framing both sides of the slender, northern-most tip of Manhattan.

Fort Washington Park and Fort Tryon Park were the first of NYRP Founder Bette Midler’s efforts to return valuable public spaces to their greatest glory.

Today, NYRP’s daily presence in Northern Manhattan includes the revitalization and maintenance of Sherman Creek Park, Highbridge Park, the Harlem River Speedway and critical sections of the streetscape.

While our Northern Manhattan operations are headquartered in Sherman Creek Park, NYRP provides daily stewardship to approximately 73 acres of public park land—including Sherman Creek and Highbridge Parks—and over 2 miles of the Harlem River shoreline. Our neighborhood scale greening effort in the Washington Heights and Inwood region includes education, free events, environmental stewardship, capital improvements, and community engagement in a broad, cross jurisdictional section of Northern Manhattan.

NYRP has reclaimed, restored and revitalized more than 400 acres of the city’s most-needed public green spaces and their adjacent communities.

New York City has the largest urban park system in the United States, yet the city has fewer acres of green space and recreational centers per person than any other major metropolitan region. To further exacerbate this situation, funding and resources have been historically inadequate to fully maintain and develop the majority of city parklands in low-income areas – often leading to devastating effects caused by illegal dumping, litter, vandalism and decay. Since 1995, NYRP has stepped in to help fill that void and change once-indifferent community mindsets regarding their immediate ecological environments.
