Chicken Enthusiasts Gather in Crown Heights

Tell someone you want to raise chickens in New York City and you'll likely get a glaring side eye and a slew of objections. Urban chicken keepers often face questions about space, safety, smells, and sounds. Luckily City Chicken Institute is dispelling the myth that there’s no room for chickens in our cityscape.

New York Restoration Project, partnering with Just Food, presents monthly workshops with Lydia Schmidt and the happy hens of Imani Community Garden in Crown Heights.

February Plant of the Month: Mahonia x media

There are few types of trees, shrubs or perennials that bloom in the winter months when most plants are in their dormant phase. While there are some that provide berries or bark texture for winter interest, few actually flower during these cold months of the season. One shrub that does flower during these months is Mahonia x media.

Textile Arts Center Brings Natural Dyes to NYRP Gardens

People grow vegetables and flowers, get to know their neighbors, attend arts events and now they are even learning how to use plant materials to produce natural dyes! Textile Arts Center Sewing Seeds program is back and hard at work teaching New Yorkers how to responsibly produce dyes using techniques and traditions that predate the invention of synthetic dyes in the 19th century. Learn about the mission of the program and the workshops and events that they are hosting in Greene Acres Community Garden and Gil Hodges Community Gardens.

Local Talent in the Gardens of Bushwick, Brownsville and East New York

We love seeing more art in ALL New York City Community Gardens! That is why we are so thrilled to partner with Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) and other amazing organizations to promote the Bringing Art to Life Series that is taking place in East Brooklyn this summer! These events celebrate the Creative Coalitions BAC established in Bushwick, Brownsville and East New York and feature entirely LOCAL talent! As if it could get any better, both East New York events take place at Gardens for the City sites! We are thrilled to see Crystal Wells and People’s Garden thriving! All of the dates are listed below, but do check BAC’s calendar for updates!
