SUMMARY:CITYPARKS ECO-INNOVATORS: After School Program
DESCRIPTION: \nThis program is organized by City Parks Foundation. From the organizer: \nEco-Innovators is a free after-school environmental leadership program for NYC students in grades 9-12. Students can attend public\, independent\, or private schools\; the main criteria are an interest in environmental sustainability\, curiosity\, and a willingness to participate actively in the program. Three of our four hubs are open to students from anywhere in NYC\, although we encourage students to choose the location most convenient to them. \n \n \n \nThroughout the year\, students investigate themes revolving around our four major NYC climate resilience challenges: \n \nCooling NYC:&nbsp\;extreme heat\, tree canopy\, and equitable access to cooling \nManaging Water in a Changing Climate:&nbsp\;flooding\, stormwater\, and green infrastructure \nBuilding Healthy Urban Ecosystems:&nbsp\;biodiversity\, habitat\, and ecological resilience \nCreating Circular Neighborhoods:&nbsp\;waste\, consumption\, reuse\, and circular systems \n \nStudents explore themes around two of these challenges each semester through a combination of hands-on investigations\, environmental data collection\, field experiences\, environmental professionals and partners\, and project-based learning. The goal is for students to move beyond simply learning about environmental problems and begin developing evidence-based ideas and solutions for their own communities. \n2026-27 Program Highlights \nThe year-round program includes 12 after-school sessions in the fall and 12 in the spring\, along with one free overnight field experience per semester. Students will also develop sustainability projects that they can present and submit during our spring&nbsp\;Dolphin Tank culminating event. \nParticipation in the year-round program also creates a pathway into our Eco-Innovators Summer Institute. Students who are at least 16 by July 1\, 2027 and demonstrate strong attendance and participation receive priority consideration for our six-week paid summer internship\, primarily supported through NYC&#8217\;s Summer Youth Employment Program. The Summer Institute allows students to deepen their scientific investigation\, fieldwork\, environmental career exposure\, and solutions-oriented project development. \n2026-27 Eco-Innovators Hubs \n \n \n \nMondays\, 3:30-5:30 PM&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&#8211\;&gt\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;East Side Community Science Center \nView location&nbsp\;|&nbsp\;Register here \nTuesdays\, 3:30-5:30 PM&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&#8211\;&gt\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;BASE Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment \nView location&nbsp\;|&nbsp\;Register here \nWednesdays\, 2:30-4:30 PM &#8211\;&gt\; Energy Tech High School \nThis hub is open only to Energy Tech students. \nView location&nbsp\;|&nbsp\;Register here \nThursdays&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&#8211\;&gt\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Sherman Creek Park\, The Community Room \nView location&nbsp\;|&nbsp\;Register here \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
