The LDC of Broadway was adopted by a local development corporation in 1983 as a place for relaxation and public recreation. After saving the site from city auction in 1999, New York Restoration Project (NYRP) breathed new life into the garden by adding fresh soil, a variety of shade-loving plants and a garden shed. In 2005, the site was used for a local art show, which featured sculptures – several elements of which remain – created by local artists.
To help ensure the garden continues to serve as an active green space and engages local residents for years to come, NYRP staff and horticulture crews work with community members to remove trash and provide ongoing maintenance, building assistance and plant material for the garden – including wood for raised planting beds, gardening tools, compost and vegetable seedlings.
Located in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, this 640-square-foot pocket garden is situated between two barbershops and located below the J/Z train. The area surrounding the garden is largely commercial in a neighborhood comprised primarily of Hispanic residents.
