Opened in 2005, the Hull Street Playground has since come active with active local programming, and community interest in using and maintaining this neighborhood space continues to escalate. A favorite among neighborhood children, approximately three-quarters of the garden is devoted to play equipment donated by KaBoom! – a national non-profit organization whose mission is to create play spaces within walking distance of every child in America.

In a neighborhood that has very little access to parkland, the garden’s playscape is a magnet for activity and is used regularly by local schoolchildren, many of whom attend P.S. 73 – The Thomas Boyland School – located just a short walk away. Entering from the street, a rod iron fence and gate protect the site and its visitors, as well as its welcoming planting beds of flowering perennials and a shady tree. The back of the garden is designed as a community gathering space, equipped with a barbecue grill, an arbor entwined with climbing vines and a garden shed.

To help ensure the garden continues to serve as an active green space and engages local residents for years to come, New York Restoration Project (NYRP) staff and horticulture crews work with community members to remove trash and provide ongoing maintenance, building assistance and plant material for the garden – including wood for raised planting beds, gardening tools, compost and vegetable seedlings.

This 2,500-square-foot garden is located in the Broadway Junction section of Brooklyn in a neighborhood that is primarily comprised of single- and multi-family residences.
