Founded in 1986 by the Claremont Homeowners Tenants Civic Improvement Association, this garden is well-used by a dedicated group of community gardeners who grow vegetables and fruits, ranging from strawberries to callalloo – a vegetable native to the Caribbean. In addition, gardeners grow and tend rose bushes, daffodils and tulips and enjoy a beautiful peach tree, which produces abundant fruit for the community. The Clay Avenue Community Garden is also used for community events, such as gardening workshops, picnics and block parties.

Since 2004, New York Restoration Project (NYRP) has helped improve the space by installing a rainwater collection system and adding raised vegetable beds and an herb garden. To ensure the garden continues to serve as an active green space and engages local residents for years to come, NYRP staff and horticulture crews work with community members to remove trash and provide ongoing maintenance for the garden and building and plant material, including wood for raised planting beds, gardening tools, compost and vegetable seedlings.

Located in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, this 4,480-square-foot garden provides an important green space to the Butler and Webster Houses – two New York City Housing Authority properties located across the street – and a surrounding community of one- and two-family homes and multi-family residences. In addition, the garden is situated within five blocks of three schools whose students often visit the Clay Avenue Community Garden to engage with and learn about the outdoors.
