Random Acts of Greenness

Everyone at New York Restoration Project (NYRP), including the Divine Miss M, is ever on the lookout in communities throughout New York City’s five boroughs for a gloriously greened stoop, a flower-filled window box or plentifully planted yard. As our staff and work crews travel among NYRP’s park and community garden worksites citywide, they cannot help but notice that more and more New Yorkers are “doin’ what comes naturally” – that is, making many spaces, however small, within their neighborhood a bit more beautiful, simply by adding a special touch of green!

To both acknowledge and promote these individual greening efforts, NYRP created “Random of Acts of Greenness” – a program that rewards residents and businesses that bring a touch of unique beauty to areas that often need it the most. Whether it is a spot of unexpected color amidst a formerly bland streetscape or the transformation of a once defoliated tree pit, NYRP believes that any change for the better is worthy of celebration – and we enthusiastically applaud these independent efforts to improve our communities. After all, the more you do, the more we’re inspired to do!

Sites may be nominated by NYRP staff or city residents and must be accompanied by a photo. All nominations are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by NYRP’s leadership team, with sites that demonstrate the most creativity in bringing beauty to blighted urban eyesores being selected for recognition. Honorees in our Random Acts of Greenness program receive a complimentary NYRP membership and brunch or lunch for two at NYRP’s New Leaf Restaurant & Bar, located in beautiful Fort Tryon Park.

If you spot an act of greenness in your neighborhood that you think deserves recognition, please let NYRP know by emailing us at randomact@nyrp.org.
