MillionTreesNYC has planted more than 240,000 trees since its launch in October 2007, including more than 30,000 street trees, and we need the help of every New Yorker – like you – to keep these trees healthy and green for years to come! Trees face many natural and man-made threats from our urban environment and require ongoing and dedicated maintenance to survive. Without dedicated tree keepers to protect our green neighbors through regular watering, pruning and tending to their soil, every tree’s health and heartiness is inevitably compromised.

Recognizing these needs, MillionTreesNYC launched its citizen-based Stewardship Corps in 2009, providing intensive workshops in urban tree care and connecting New York City residents with the tools they need to take care of the trees in their community. Under the banner of MillionTreesNYC, New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation are working in collaboration with partner organizations – including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York Botanical Garden, Queens Botanical Garden, Staten Island Greenbelt and Trees New York – and with the generous support and funding of pop music icons The Police to build a collaborative, community-based network of tree keepers. Every day, the MillionTreesNYC Stewardship Corps will engage New Yorkers in urban tree stewardship through:
Accessible, no-cost tree care and community organizing training.
Coordination and expansion of existing environmental and tree care programs across New York City.
“Train-the-trainer” workshops to empower Corps members to educate new tree keepers through their local networks.
Distribution of tree keeper toolkits to all participating Corps members.
Coordination of possible tree adoption by Corps member for trees needing care in their community.
Online resources to adopt a tree or group of trees and space for tree keepers to network and share tree care resources.
