In 2009, MillionTreesNYC (MTNYC) co-partners New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation launched the MillionTreesNYC Training Program – an initiative created to provide green-collar job training to some of New York City’s most disadvantaged young adults, as well as to support the long-term maintenance and stewardship of trees newly planted under the MillionTreesNYC 10-year plan.
The MillionTreesNYC Training Program (MTTP) is a unique seven-month program that is inspired by the green-collar jobs movement and designed to engage disconnected New York City young adults – aged 18 to 24 – by providing both on-the-job career training and classroom education in the fields of urban forestry, ecological restoration and urban landscaping. Identified by Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Center for Economic Opportunity as one of the age groups most in need of marketable employment skills.
Program graduates are prepared for a variety of career paths, including urban forestry management and ecological restoration at the city’s Parks Department, landscape design and installation at NYRP and a variety of horticulture and forestry-related jobs with private companies throughout the New York City metropolitan area.
The green-collar jobs movement advocates for the development of environmentally sustainable industries and the jobs that support them. Green-collar jobs provide good wages, benefits and opportunities for growth that help people build pathways out of poverty, and help cities and regions build more independent, sustainable economies. In New York City, green-collar jobs are currently in high demand as a result of MillionTreesNYC, and the MillionTreesNYC Training Program aims to provide young adults with the specialized training they need to succeed in these highly skilled professions.
The MillionTreesNYC Training Program is jointly led by New York City’s Parks Department and NYRP and is made possible by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s Center for Economic Opportunity and through generous grants made to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City from the Altman Foundation, David Rockefeller, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Arthur Ross Foundation and the Dodge Foundation.
The New York City Parks Department and NYRP are currently jointly seeking individuals for the MillionTreesNYC Training Program. Applicants should be interested in hands-on, environmental work and should be motivated to learn both while on the job and in a classroom environment. Please be aware that this program is designed for ambitious individuals who enjoy working outdoors, like getting their hands dirty and demonstrate discipline and consistency getting to work on-time for an early work day (most days begin at 7:00 a.m.).
