On April 28, NYRP and founder Bette Midler celebrated Arbor Day in the Bronx with our incredible MillionTreesNYC lead sponsors BNP Paribas and Toyota and our great partners the Parks Department and the NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA). Three hundred corporate volunteers, NYCHA residents, and local 5th graders planted 119 new trees at the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Houses – and finished just before a thunderous rain storm rolled through to water the trees!

The planting portion of the event culminated with remarks by Ms. Midler, NYCHA Chairman John Rhea, NYCHA Commissioner Margarita Lopez, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, COO of BNP Paribas Larry Sobin, and Group Vice President Toyota North America Pat Pineda. Good Morning America’s weather anchor Sam Champion served as the event’s emcee and received an honorary award for his longstanding support of MillionTreesNYC. As part of our Arbor Day celebration, NYRP also hosted a series of eco- and child-friendly activities, including an exotic animal exhibit featuring a bearded dragon and a box turtle.

The Arbor Day celebration was one in a series of earth-friendly NYRP events and campaigns during the month of April. NYRP hosted a total of nine tree giveaways to distribute 1,525 free to New York City residents. Other April events included a city-wide Reforestation Day, hosted by the Parks Department, and community tree plantings in Queens and Brooklyn. In total, NYRP directly planted 1,133 trees in April, all of which are a part of the march to one million by 2017.
